Search Engine Marketing: Is Content Really King?

The first order of business for any webmaster is to increase the search engine rankings of their virtual property. To find out why decent rankings are important for anyone interested in marketing online, read more below.

It’s not well known that PR is not absolutely necessary for great rankings. With decent PR, decent rankings are a no-brainer. Without good PR, you’ve got to do a little more work. Focusing on building Page Rank, although important in the long term, should not be the only thing you try to do. Given that Page Rank is totally controlled by Google, internet marketers seem to be spending more and more time chasing Big G. It’s not much different than a dog chasing it’s own tail – the poor creature never seems to catch it and everyone watching knows it before the dog does. Understand that Page Rank is simply a measure of your site’s authority. It is not a measure of your bottom line.

Anyone, working on any website, can get some decent rankings if they’re willing to put in the time and effort. The process typically can be a little hit and miss before you begin to see what works for your unique niche. But before you go charging off, you must ensure that you’ve got the basics covered. And by that I mean your site must convert. Given that you’ve got a professional looking, properly coded and easily navigable site, it still has to convince visitors to take action. Search engine marketing is NOT Page Rank or SERPs or web design and code – It’s the process of getting visitors to take action. This is precisely where the CB Affiliate Loophole really shines. It is folly to focus on your site’s rankings if you have no idea whether or not it can convert.

Never, ever develop a site before you’ve done your keyword research. The keywords you choose will determine site structure and content and more importantly, your marketing. Given that marketing is our first order of business, where do we begin? Job one is building backlinks. Not all backlinks are created equal! The backlinks we desire have our keywords and keyphrases as anchor text. As far as the search engines are concerned, one link is better than none. That means you should be placing links on sites and domains that may or may not have high Page Rank. Given that we need backlinks, what’s the perfect number? Only your competition knows for sure. Competitive markets normally require more links. Less competitive markets, less links. Of course no one is going argue that the more links you have, the better your rankings. But, and here’s the kicker, your choice of keywords and in the final analysis your anchor text is more important than sheer numbers. Decent search engine rankings are necessarily a matter of marrying your anchor text to your keywords. Get this wrong and your site is bound for search engine oblivion.

Of course the traffic you generate as a result of your link building efforts is wasted if you’re not testing. And testing is at the very heart of conversions. Guess what? We’re right back where we began – talking about conversions! Any more about conversions is beyond the scope of this article. But stay-tuned, I’ll be posting more about this in a few days. Don’t worry, converting your traffic is the best part of your job!
